Our history

Scarborough & District Search & Rescue Team Founded
7th July 1965

Founded as the Scarborough and District Search and Rescue Team, the team was originally started by the North York Moors National Park voluntary rangers who saw a need to provide a service to the increasing numbers of walkers using the moors.[2] Included in this was the famous Lyke Wake Walk which attracted many thousands each year to attempt to walk its 46 miles (74 km) in less than 24 hours.

First Callout
26th October 1965

The team received its first callout on 26th October 1965  when six youngsters from Teeside went missing on Fylingdale Moor whilst taking part in the Lyke Wake Walk

Moved to Snainton
1996

The team moved from Ravenscar to its current base at Snainton

Renamed Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team
2007

The Team was renamed the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team

Awarded The Queen’s Award For Voluntary Service
2012

Awarded The Queen’s Award For Voluntary Service The MBE for voluntary groups.

Awarded The Duke of York's Community Initiative Award
2013
Snainton base extended
2016

The base at was revamped and extended to accommodate larger vehicle fleet & water rescue equipment

    Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue works in cooperation with the police and other emergency services to relieve suffering and distress amongst persons affected by accidents or natural hazards on the North York Moors, Dalby Forest, Yorkshire Wolds, or anywhere else we are needed.
